Sean Cooke is a doctoral candidate in transport studies within the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town. He is an external research partner for UN Environment, focusing on the quantitative analysis of non-motorised transport programmes and policies, as well as the health and mobility of children in African urban environments. His PhD research examines how to manage the priorities of equitable accessibility and public transport financial viability in the pursuit of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in South African cities. For the duration of his doctorate, he is embedded within the City of Cape Town’s Transport and Urban Development Authority through a knowledge transfer program. The program is funded by Mistra Urban Futures and forms part of their global research agenda: Realising Just Cities, which promotes a transdisciplinary, co-production approach to urban research.
